More Than Your Average Monday Night
Nonprofit to Host Scholarship Fundraiser at Big Hunt in Dupont Circle
The More than Me Foundation, a nonprofit focusing on education and global awareness, is hosting "More than an Evening Out" at Big Hunt, in Dupont Circle, on May 10th from 6PM-12AM. The event is part of More than Me's Spring Fundraising campaign and will feature live music, drink specials, and raffle prizes. All proceeds from the event will help More than Me meet its goal of sending 25 Liberian students to school.
"More than an Evening Out" will feature local music from Duke Ellington School of the Arts graduate and Wammie-award winning artist Margot MacDonald, local Blues-man Ted Garber, D.C.-based Soul/Pop band The Honeyguns, and music from DJ Joc.la.Roc. Drink specials include .00 rail drinks and .50 house pints. Tickets for the event can be purchased for in advance through the More than Me website, http://morethanme.org, or for dollars at Big Hunt on May 10th. All proceeds from the evening will go toward tuition and school supplies for children in Liberia.
Liberia has the second lowest per capita income in the world and for most families, survival takes priority over education. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has said, “All the children I meet, when I ask them what they want most, they say, ‘I want to learn, I want to go to school, I want an education.’” More than Me believes that with an education, children have a better chance of preventing disease, increasing life expectancy, and reaching their potential. The group hopes that this event will help raise awareness of the need for childhood education in Liberia and around the world.
More than Me, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was formed in 2009 after founder Katie Meyler returned from war-torn Liberia determined that one person with enough drive can make a difference. Meyler now speaks to schools and organizations about how to "be the change” they want to see in the world. She founded More than Me to increase access to education for children abroad and raise global awareness here in the US. As the Liberian government recuperates from the debt created by a brutal civil war, its funding is not enough to support education for all Liberian children. "61% of children where we work in West Point, Monrovia are out of school and the money we raise with this event will help them to achieve their dream of being able to read and write for the first time," Meyler said.
Big Hunt is located at 1345 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington D.C. near Metro's Red Line (Dupont Circle/Farragut North) or Blue Line (Farragut West).
