A spoken word piece written by Okieriete Onaodowan. Music by Matthew Santos. Performed by Okieriete Onaodowan and Matthew Santos.
We recently had the pleasure of hosting a fundraising event in NYC. Guests gathered together at The Wooly for drinks, amazing bites, incredible company and spoken word performances by “Oak” Okieriete Onaodowan and Katie Meyler. Oak is the extremely talented, Grammy Award Winning Actor of Hamilton. He wrote and produced this moving piece for the event. Oak’s talent is only outmatched by the size of his heart.
The event was chaired by Shari Rosen, a longtime friend and co-founder of InterConnect Events. We are excited to have her guest blog today’s post. Shari, take it away and thank you to the moon + back.
Backstage at the Forbes Philanthropy Summit in 2014. Katie Meyler was up next to deliver a short interstitial on More Than Me to a room full of 150 billionaires. She wasn’t in the green room, the ballroom, the bathroom…I heard some noise down the hallway and saw a big gathering of the catering staff. Katie was in the center of them practicing her presentation. Her energy was magnetic—she inspired us all that day. I’ve since had the pleasure and privilege of getting to know Katie, working on other Forbes events, sharing an incredible experience in Israel together and being brought along on the MTM journey. When she approached me about helping to do a fundraising event for MTM in NY, even though I had a full fall roster, her passion won me over—how could I say no?! I welcomed the opportunity to get more involved with the cause and was excited to bring in family and friends to roll up their sleeves…for the girls. There were a few cool raw spaces I had in mind but given the short timeframe, I knew The Wooly, in the Woolworth Building in the financial district would be ideal. Vintage meets speak easy with a hip relaxed vibe and great DJ would work well for MTM’s first foray into doing something fun and casual in the evening. It’s one of those hidden gems—a perfect match—and a perfect evening. Looking forward to the next.
